Research by Sustainable Farms demonstrates how managing farm dams through grazing control and revegetation significantly boosts bird biodiversity.

Farm dams are common across Australian agricultural landscapes, primarily serving as water sources for livestock and irrigation. Despite their widespread presence, farm dams are often overlooked as potential habitats for wildlife.

The research investigated how different farm dam management approaches affect bird communities. Researchers compared three management types: unfenced dams with continuous grazing, unfenced dams with rotational grazing, and enhanced dams. Enhanced dams are dams that are fenced to restrict livestock access and have revegetation of native trees and shrubs around the dam.

The study, conducted across 109 farm dams on 34 farms across south-eastern Australia’s tsheep-wheat belt, found that enhanced dams supported a significantly greater number of birds and more species.

In an era of rapid global change, long-term ecological monitoring is essential for understanding species responses and informing wildlife conservation and ecosystem management. Traditional monitoring methods, though reliable, are generally labour intensive, expensive, and can have logistical challenges.

Technological advancements offer opportunities for more efficient, scalable, and cost-effective monitoring, but transitioning to new methods presents challenges. A new study led by Dr Jessie Buettel from the Sustainable Farms team, is investigating how innovative technologies such as passive acoustic recorders, drones and environmental DNA (eDNA) offer promising solutions for expanding our capacity to monitor biodiversity, while reducing costs and improving data quality.

The Sustainable Farms team from The Australian National University has been named the Biodiversity Award Winner for the NSW Sustainability Awards 2022.

The post Sustainable Farms wins NSW Sustainability Award appeared first on ANU Sustainable Farms.

The award from the Banksia Foundation is an acknowledgement of how Sustainable Farms is leading change in the biodiversity field, with our innovative approaches to science translation to drive a more sustainable future.

The judges were impressed by our powerful online tool BirdCast, which helps farmers identify management actions to support conservation of birds on their properties.

BirdCast draws on nearly two decades of data collected by Sustainable Farms ecologists on hundreds of farms in south-eastern Australia. With many species of native wildlife under threat and biodiversity declining worldwide, farmers have an opportunity to contribute to creating habitat for numerous species. The BirdCast tool enables farmers to predict what birds might utilise woodland areas on their farm, and to understand how bird occupancy might change under a range of management actions.

Sustainable Farms Lead Scientist Professor David Lindenmayer said this free tool enables land managers to access real science to help them make the best decisions for their farm.

“Biodiversity in the woodlands of southeastern Australia is under threat, and farmers are keen to know how they can help turn this around,” Professor Lindenmayer said.

“The long-term ecological studies undertaken by our team over two decades mean we have a really good understanding of how wildlife responds to management changes.”

This award closely follows on from Sustainable Farms winning the Eureka Prize for Applied Environmental Research, just a few weeks ago.

BirdCast was developed by members of our team, including statistician Kassel Hingee and ecologist Angelina Siegrist, and has now been awarded the Eureka Prize for Applied Environmental Research.

The free web tool gives farmers an indication of which woodland bird species might be living on their farms, and how that might change under different scenarios.

Director of Sustainable Farms, Michelle Young, said this latest recognition comes after decades of working closely with farmers to gather data.

“None of this work would been possible without the support of those farmers who enabled our team to monitor biodiversity on their properties for the last two decades,” she said.

“BirdCast is a practical tool that draws on this research, and gives farmers and land managers access to scientific data to help protect and conserve our shared natural heritage.

“For example, it allows farmers to predict the changes that would happen if they planted a new shelterbelt on their farm, or restored a degraded patch of remnant woodland,” Ms Young said.

Early on Sunday 31 July, 32 Landcare members braved the cool and cloudy conditions for a ‘Woodland Birds and Farm Dams’ field day in Bombay. The event, kindly hosted by Bombay and Upper Shoalhaven Landcare, was all about the benefits of promoting biodiversity on your property, featuring guest speakers from Local Land Services (LLS) and The Australian National University (ANU) Sustainable Farms team.

Andy Taylor, Senior Natural Resource Management Advisor from Braidwood LLS, led the group on a stroll through patches of remnant eucalypt woodland to observe local bird life. Spotted alongside the familiar wood ducks, rosellas, and wrens, were three sightings of the male Scarlet Robin (Petroica boodang – pictured). This vulnerable little bird is the flagship species for LLS’s Save Our Scarlet Robin Program, which has helped fund fences and native plants to protect and revegetate over 500 hectares in the region, with the aim of increasing habitat connectivity for a range of threatened woodland birds.

The sightings at Sunday’s field day show promising signs for the Scarlet Robin, with many pairs reported by Bombay Landcare members along the river corridor this winter. Sadly, much of its preferred habitat – dry eucalypt woodlands, usually with shrubs and an open, grassy understorey – were damaged in the Black Summer bushfires. However, at the site visited on Sunday, post-fire plantings to improve the density of mid-storey shrubs are doing well, and will grow to provide cover for small birds from predators like currawongs, as well as forage and nesting habitat.

Andy outlined that, while the Save Our Scarlet Robin Program transitions to the next phase of monitoring established sites, landowners can continue to seek advice from LLS on their own protection and revegetation projects to promote habitat for woodland birds. He also highlighted the importance of citizen science, where landholders can record sightings of threatened birds on apps like eBird and Birdata. This data can help researchers evaluate population movements and, in the long term, potentially identify whether programs like the Scarlet Robin project are supporting a resurgence of threatened species.

After the bird walk, researchers from ANU’s Sustainable Farms took to the stage, leading Landcarers past two dam sites, one grazed and the other excluded from livestock. Richard Beggs, a Research and Extension Officer who’s done extensive monitoring on birds and dams in the Murray-Riverina region, as well as a PhD on native noisy miners in box-gum grassy woodland, pointed out valuable information on ways to improve the quality of dams for agricultural use, but also enhance them as an ecological resource to support biodiversity.

Michelle Young, Sustainable Farms Director, was also there to show the group some of the great resources the project has developed, including handy planting guides on what-to-plant-where around your dams. As an example, leaving old growth trees in the vicinity of the dam is highly beneficial (albeit not on, or right beside the dam wall as it can compromise its integrity). These trees offer an intricate habitat, decades advanced, and can help shade the water and prevent excessive evaporation during a hot summer. Similarly, having a healthy range of terrestrial and aquatic plants growing in and around the dam can help filter the water, improving its quality and the wellbeing and weight gain of the animals drinking it.

Given the vast majority of land use in Australia (>50%) is taken up by various agricultural pursuits, a powerful take home from Richard was the significant role farmland can play in striving for a balanced, productive, biodiverse, and resilient landscape. Enhancing your natural assets, even a simple farm dam, is a positive step forward.

Upper Shoalhaven Landcare would like to thank Andy Taylor, Richard Beggs, and Michelle Young for sharing their expertise and joining the Bombay Landcare group for the day. We also wish to acknowledge Local Land Services for funding the event, and Vanessa Bunn, from Vanilla Catering, for saving the day by turning up with hot sausage rolls and soup in the gusty conditions on Sunday.

Sustainable Farms Project Director Michelle Young said: “We are delighted that Sustainable Farms’ BirdCast tool has been recognised in the 2022 National Trust Heritage Awards. These awards recognise outstanding practice in conserving and protecting heritage, including natural heritage.

“BirdCast is a practical tool that can support farmers and land managers to protect and conserve our shared natural heritage. It enables farmers to predict what birds might utilise woodland areas on their farm, and to understand how the bird species present might change under a range of scenarios,” Ms Young said. Ms Young is pictured with Sustainable Farms ecologist Eleanor Lang at the awards ceremony in Sydney.

“At a time when many species of plants and animals are threatened by extinction, woodland areas on farms are extremely valuable, providing food and homes for many of these species. It’s important that management of these areas are supported by science to help protect biodiversity. The BirdCast tool gives land managers a solid indication of how their own changes in management might have a real-world impact on biodiversity,” Ms Young said.

“It can sometimes be difficult for the farmers and other land managers who are stewards of our natural heritage to access real science to inform their decision making on farms, and this tool can support these decisions when it comes to managing woodland areas on farms.”

Farm dams, creeks, remnant vegetation, native grasses and rocky outcrops are all features of farming landscapes. These valuable natural assets need protection and restoration, not only to conserve biodiversity and landscape function, but also to underpin agricultural production.

“At Sustainable Farms we work with farmers to build natural capital including biodiversity on their farms, says Ms Young. “We support them by providing access to a range of experts, not least a regional team of ecologists, to help them manage their farms’ natural assets.”

The Sustainable Farms project works with farmers on the NSW South West Slopes, in the Central West, Murray-Riverina and North East Victoria.

“Our approach is called ‘Natural Asset farming’ and includes small, quick projects such as fencing a rocky outcrop, to longer-term investments such as planting a native shelterbelt,” says Ms Young.

“It’s not just about conserving biodiversity, however, we also address economics and mental health, as the welfare and financial security of farmers are an essential part of sustainable farming.”

Ms Young says the management recommendations they propose have an extensive history of practical application by thousands of farmers with support from groups like Landcare and Greening Australia. The long-running biodiversity surveys undertaken on farms by the Sustainable Farms team provide the evidence to show the impact of these management changes.

“Core to our outreach program is that it is farmer driven,” she says. “By bringing a range of experts to the farmer, it allows dialogue between different groups. This supports innovative thinking and the uptake of new practices.

“We all have a common goal: healthy farms, healthy farmers and healthy profits.”

New webtool enables land managers to estimate the birds present in woodlands on farms.

This week we launched our new Sustainable Farms online tool, BirdCast. BirdCast is a planning tool for farmers and NRM practitioners that can be used to indicate which bird species may live in woodland areas on farms.

BirdCast is unique because it enables decades of research undertaken on farms by the Sustainable Farms team to be accessed in an interactive way by farmers and NRM practitioners, to help inform on-farm decision making around remnant management and revegetation.

The BirdCast tool draws on nearly two decades of data on more than sixty birds. The tool allows the user to assess the potential for enhancing bird diversity in a range of scenarios.

“With many species of native wildlife under threat and biodiversity declining worldwide, farmers have an opportunity to contribute to protecting woodland areas on farms, thereby creating habitat for a number of species,” Sustainable Farms Lead Scientist Professor David Lindenmayer said. “The BirdCast tool enables farmers to predict what birds might utilise woodland areas on their farm, and to understand how bird occupancy might change under a range of scenarios.

“It gives land managers a solid indication of how their own changes in management might have a real-world impact on biodiversity.”

BirdCast is based on a statistical model drawing on 17 years of empirical data on 62 bird species in individual woodland areas. The estimates it creates are suitable for remnant Box Gum Grassy Woodland or planted eucalypt woodland (often shelterbelts) on grazing or mixed farms in the NSW South West Slopes and parts of the Central West, Murray-Riverina and north east Victoria. Five species of conservation concern are included in these estimates.

“It can sometimes be challenging for the people who are the stewards of our amazing landscapes to access real science to inform their decisions,” Professor Lindenmayer said. “It’s absolutely vital that wildlife is monitored over timescales of decades, not just years, so that we can understand the impact that land management changes, climate and other factors have on our wildlife. This tool is a direct output of this long-term monitoring, with real-world impacts for farmers making decisions about their land.”

BirdCast has been in development for nearly two years, as part of a collaborative project with support from Meat and Livestock Australia. The model and web interface was built by statistician Kassel Hingee. BirdLife Photography provided the bird photos used in the app. Sustainable Farms ecologist Angelina Siegrist used an earlier version of the app to consult with a range of NRM staff and farmers, and the final version takes into account their feedback and suggestions.

It is anticipated that BirdCast will be a particularly useful for NRM organisations and Landcare groups who are working alongside farmers to improve woodlands on farms.

BirdCast also provides the option for users to export reports based on the information they input into the app.
