										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Michelle joined the Sustainable Farms initiative at the Australian National University with a vision to bridge research and on-ground practice change, and she leaves behind a legacy of collaboration, innovation, and measurable change. Under her direction, the project has grown into a nationally acclaimed program that has undertaken world-class research on the integration of biodiversity conservation with agricultural production, and shared these learnings with over 13,000 participants at educational community events and forums. Her passion for facilitating collaborative partnerships, and supporting farmers with evidence-based tools for conservation and productivity, has made a significant contribution to improving conservation on farms in the critically endangered woodlands of the sheep-wheat belt.</p>
<p>Michelle will continue her commitment to land stewardship as she steps into the role of CEO at the National Landcare Network.</p>
<p>The expertise within the Sustainable Farms team ensures the program is well placed to continue its important work into the future. Professor David Lindenmayer will continue in his role as Lead Scientist, providing internationally-recognised expertise in landscape ecology and biodiversity conservation. With strong skills across research and community engagement, the Sustainable Farms team will continue grow the project’s impact.</p>
<p>The Sustainable Farms team thanks Michelle for her vision, passion, and tireless commitment, and wishes her every success in the next chapter of her career.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Farm dams are common across Australian agricultural landscapes, primarily serving as water sources for livestock and irrigation. Despite their widespread presence, farm dams are often overlooked as potential habitats for wildlife.</p>
<p>The research investigated how different farm dam management approaches affect bird communities. Researchers compared three management types: unfenced dams with continuous grazing, unfenced dams with rotational grazing, and enhanced dams. Enhanced dams are dams that are fenced to restrict livestock access and have revegetation of native trees and shrubs around the dam.</p>
<p>The study, conducted across 109 farm dams on 34 farms across south-eastern Australia&#8217;s tsheep-wheat belt, found that enhanced dams supported a significantly greater number of birds and more species.</p>

Traditional monitoring methods, though reliable, are generally labour intensive, expensive, and can have logistical challenges.</p>
<p>Technological advancements offer opportunities for more efficient, scalable, and cost-effective monitoring, but transitioning to new methods presents challenges. A new study led by Dr Jessie Buettel from the Sustainable Farms team, is investigating how innovative technologies such as passive acoustic recorders, drones and environmental DNA (eDNA) offer promising solutions for expanding our capacity to monitor biodiversity, while reducing costs and improving data quality.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Amphibians are among the most threatened animal groups worldwide, with habitat loss—mainly due to agricultural expansion—being a key factor in their decline. Frogs, in particular, need complex habitats near water to survive, but their limited ability to move between habitats makes them especially vulnerable to environmental changes. As natural wetlands and streams disappear, farm dams have become more common due to the need for reliable water sources for livestock. Many species, including frogs, now rely on these dams for habitat.</p>
<p>New research by the Sustainable Farms team at The Australian National University found that enhancing farm dams &#8211; through fencing to restrict livestock access and revegetation &#8211; can significantly benefit frog populations. The study focused on the South West Slopes bioregion of New South Wales and northeast Victoria, where extensive agricultural land use has dramatically altered natural habitats.</p>
<p>The study, led by Dr Michelle Littlefair, looked at frog populations at 85 farm dams in the region between 2020 and 2021. The research aimed to assess whether enhancing farm dams improved frog habitat and frog abundance and diversity.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since the establishment of Sustainable Farms by the Australian National University in 2018, the initiative has aimed to apply scientific evidence to achieve better outcomes for biodiversity on farms. An independent evaluation conducted by First Person Consulting, shows how far we’ve come in meeting our vision of &#8220;Healthy Farmers, Healthy Farms, Healthy Profits&#8221;.</p>
<p>The evaluation, conducted by First Person Consulting, measured Sustainable Farms’ impact against three strategic goals:</p>
<ol>
<li>Undertake innovative multidisciplinary research that informs recommendations for the management of natural assets on farms</li>
<li>Increase landholder knowledge and adoption of enhanced natural asset management practices</li>
<li>Support the capacity of the NRM sector to support farmers to improve management practices</li>
</ol>
<p>The evaluation found that Sustainable Farms fills a critical gap in the NRM sector by combining rigorous, long-term scientific research with the ability to translate findings into practical, locally relevant material. Sustainable Farms is highly valued by its stakeholders as a key bridge between university research, agricultural extension and impact on the ground.</p>

<p>Australian agriculture is currently at a tipping point between the risks and impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, and the potential benefits for farmers of market-based mechanisms for addressing these threats. Research from the Sustainable Farms initiative highlights both the importance and complexity of farmers engaging in natural resource management (NRM) practices on their mental health. While sustainable land management can provide social and mental health benefits through increased connectedness and engagement with nature, the potential benefits are closely linked with individual circumstances, attitudes to farming systems and the overall health of the farming enterprise. Financial stress is a major cause of poor mental health for farmers, meaning that any efforts to improve environmental conditions must minimise financial risk. With a holistic approach that considers mental health, social connectedness and whole-of-farm management strategies, NRM programs and knowledge sharing opportunities can play an important role in educating and supporting farmers to undertake successful environmental programs.</p>

<p>There is mixed evidence about the effectiveness of NRM practices on farmer mental health (Batterham et al. 2022). Studies suggest impacts can vary based on the farmer&#8217;s personal values, motivations, and perceptions of the practices in the context of farm management strategies.</p>
<p>A common finding is that financial stress is a major cause of poor mental health in farming communities. Programs aimed at encouraging farmers to adopt NRM practices must acknowledge and address this and recognise that conservation efforts perceived as a financial burden could unintentionally exacerbate mental health strains.</p>
<p>While the link between engaging in NRM practices and improved well-being is not always direct, evidence suggests several ways NRM practices can positively impact farmer mental health.<br />
Participating in collaborative NRM programs and farmer-led initiatives can foster social connections, reducing feelings of isolation and creating a sense of belonging within farming communities.<br />
Adopting NRM practices can empower farmers, providing a sense of agency in responding to environmental challenges and contributing to the long-term health of their land.</p>
<p>Emerging evidence suggests that adopting a whole-systems perspective on farm management, such as through the application of socio-ecological principles (SES), might be more effective in supporting long-term farmer well-being compared to focusing solely on individual NRM practices.<span style="color: #008080;"><br />

<p>To effectively support farmer mental health while advancing the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, a varied approach is required:</p>
<p><strong>Integrate mental health support into NRM programs through promoting social connectedness and knowledge sharing</strong></p>
<p>Natural Resource Management (NRM) programs should be designed to prioritise farmer mental health by fostering social connection and facilitating knowledge exchange. This can be achieved by supporting existing farmer-led networks, cooperatives, and community-based NRM initiatives such as Landcare groups to provide opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, mutual support, and designing programs that acknowledge the social aspects of NRM practices. These programs should incorporate mental health literacy training into agricultural extension activities. This approach recognises that strong social connections and shared learning experiences are essential for effective natural resource management and positive mental health outcomes in farming communities. As market-based schemes for nature repair emerge, governments must continue to support community led organisations.</p>
<p><strong>Provide targeted financial incentives for NRM adoption</strong></p>
<p>To support farmers in adopting Natural Resource Management (NRM) practices while mitigating financial stress, a comprehensive system of targeted financial incentives should be implemented. This system should include grants, subsidies, tax breaks, revenue contingent loans and facilitated market access specifically designed for approved NRM practices. This can help to offset upfront costs and potential short-term income reductions associated with transitioning to more sustainable farming methods. By alleviating financial burdens and demonstrating the economic viability of NRM practices, these incentives can significantly reduce anxiety among farmers and encourage broader adoption of sustainable farming methods.</p>
<p><strong>Promote whole-of-farm management approaches and socio-ecological principles</strong></p>
<p>To enhance both environmental sustainability and farmer well-being, policies to promote the uptake of environmental improvement projects should actively promote the adoption of whole-farm approaches and socio-ecological system (SES) principles. This can be achieved by providing comprehensive training and extension services that equip farmers with the knowledge and skills to implement SES principles. This includes understanding complex systems, adaptive management, and holistic decision-making. By fostering a holistic approach to farm management that considers ecological, financial and social factors, these policies can contribute to more resilient agricultural systems and improved farmer mental health.</p>

Restoring degraded land can lead to productivity gains, such as improved livestock health due to shelterbelts or livestock weight gains due to improved water quality from enhanced farm dams (Dobes <em>et al</em>. 2021). Maintaining native vegetation can offer private benefits such as improved soil stability, pest regulation, and increased land value (Clayton <em>et al</em>. 2024).</p>
<p>However, for many landholders the costs of restoration projects are high, returns take time to materialise, or undertaking environmental projects means giving up productive land to other uses. Studies show that benefits are unevenly distributed across different regions and farm types and that while environmental improvements can increase land value, this depends on location and other factors (Clayton <em>et al</em>. 2023). Studies also show that the likelihood of farmers adopting natural asset improvement practices is significantly influenced by local conditions and population characteristics (ADOPT study).</p>
<p>The unevenness of benefits and challenges in increasing adoption underscore the need for targeted policy interventions to ensure that landholders who might not see immediate financial returns or face production losses are incentivised to adopt land management practices that improve natural assets and biodiversity. Without such support, landholders are likely to prioritise other projects that more directly benefit their farm businesses and landscape level environmental restoration will not be achieved.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #008080;">Policy Responses</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">To unlock the public and private benefits of improving natural assets on farms, a combination of regionally-tailored incentives and strategic interventions is essential. Governments must create strategies to support management interventions with the strongest evidence base of potential success and properly direct support to areas where the greatest impact can be realised:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Region-specific Financial Incentives:</strong> Targeted financial incentives, such as grants, tax breaks, or subsidies, should be tailored to the specific needs of different regions and farm types. Focus should be on areas where landholders face the greatest financial barriers to adopting sustainable practices, where trade-offs between agricultural productivity and environmental restoration are apparent, and where the greatest potential for nature positive ecosystem restoration exists.</li>
<li><strong>Contingent Loans for Environmental Improvements:</strong> Revenue-contingent loans offer a flexible financing solution for landholders undertaking long-term environmental projects (Chapman &amp; Lindenmayer, 2019). These loans reduce the risk of financial hardship for landholders during periods of low income or before the benefits of restoration projects are realised. Contingent loans provide a risk-mitigation mechanism that encourages landholders to invest in biodiversity improvements without jeopardising their business operations.</li>
<li><strong>Tailored Extension and Support Programs:</strong> To complement financial incentives, tailored extension programs are essential. These programs should provide technical assistance, training, and long-term support, especially in regions where there is scope for private net benefits from environmental improvements.</li>
</ul>
<p>By aligning private landholder interests with public environmental goals, governments can enhance natural capital, strengthen rural economies, and improve Australia’s biodiversity outlook. Region-specific financial support and targeted programs will be essential for scaling up adoption and ensuring that Australia’s farming landscapes are both productive and sustainable in the long term.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The project aims to inform the re-emergence of First Nations burning in contemporary endangered woodlands in south-eastern Australia by: (a) implementing a First Nations led burning program, and in conjunction, (b) monitoring the relative ecological responses, including those that influence fire-risk. The expected outcomes include new evidence to guide contemporary First Nations burning programs implemented by our project partners and others. The project will establish an interface between First Nations knowledge and western science to achieve long-lasting multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural outcomes.</p>
<p>The PhD project will be co-designed with project partners and the student within the framework of our larger project. First Nations identified students are strongly encouraged to apply.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Managing the water quality of farm dams is critical to the health of livestock as well as boosting crop production, according to new research from the Sustainable Farms group at The Australian National University (ANU).</p>
<p>According to the ANU researchers, “enhancing” dams by erecting fencing would help mitigate the impacts of livestock and significantly improve water quality, while also allowing vegetation to flourish, which is good for biodiversity.</p>
<p>There are more than 1.7 million farm dams across Australia. More than 650,000 of them are located in the Murray-Darling basin region.</p>
<p>Farm dams provide habitats for a wide range of native species, so any direct environmental impact to these dams can adversely impact biodiversity. According to the research team, the findings offer valuable insight for farmers and the Australian agriculture industry.</p>
<p>“These dams store a huge amount of water, yet traditionally there has been minimal investment in improving the quality and retention of water in these dams,” lead author Dr Maldwyn Evans, from ANU, said.</p>
<p>The researchers collected data over two and half years on water quality, vegetation, rainfall and other relevant factors, in and around 109 completely fenced, partially fenced, or unfenced farm dams across 34 farms in the sheep-wheat belt of southeast Australia. They also looked at whether livestock had direct access to the dams for extended periods of time.</p>
<p>“We found that when livestock were excluded from the surrounds of a dam and native vegetation was replanted or allowed to regenerate, the water quality in dams was significantly improved,” Dr Evans, from the ANU Sustainable Farms group, said.</p>
<p>“For example, levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and other chemicals were all lower in these enhanced dams than in other dams.</p>
<p>“Phosphorus is directly linked to increased algal blooms, which pose a serious risk of poisoning for many animal species, including livestock.</p>
<p>“Our results also indicated that reduced livestock grazing in the surrounds of enhanced dams reduced levels of E. coli in the water. This highlights that one mechanism by which faecal bacteria enter dams is through direct run off containing faeces.</p>
<p>“We found reducing livestock access to farm dams using fencing led to a decrease in trampling, grazing and browsing which increased vegetation cover in and around the dam. Increased vegetation cover has been shown to improve water quality by reducing soil erosion and supporting physical and chemical filtration of sediment, nutrients and faecal material in inflows.”</p>
<p>David Smith, a co-author of the study from the ANU Sustainable Farms group, said even modest restoration efforts to the surrounds of farm dams can have positive results.</p>
<p>“If a farmer’s primary goal is to maximise water quality, then fencing that restricts livestock access to a dam will result in the best outcomes. By installing a pipe and trough system, livestock can still access the drinking water in these dams,” he said.</p>
<p>“Enhancing large numbers of dams across a farm is not always feasible. In those cases, rotational grazing management can provide some of the benefits to water quality. Rotational grazing has a diverse range of benefits. These benefits include substantial increases in the probability of tree regeneration and increases in plant diversity.</p>
<p>“Our research shows that dam enhancement improves vegetation cover in and around the dam, providing ideal conditions for plants and animals, such as birds and frogs, to thrive. This likely increase in vegetative biodiversity also provides habitat and foraging opportunities for other animals.</p>
<p>“In related research, we have demonstrated that enhancing farm dams has significant benefits for birds, frogs and waterbugs and that enhanced farm dams can become hotspots for breeding woodland birds.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Muttama Creek Catchment is a tributary of the Murrumbidgee River and stretches from North of Cootamundra to North of Gundagai. It is situated in the sheep-wheat belt, a large area across south-eastern Australia known for agricultural production. It is also located in a unique bio-region with natural features and environmental processes that strongly influence the occurrence of plants, animals and other organisms.</p>
<p>The catchment area has experienced a lot of change and is facing increasing volatility and pressures, such as climatic and demographic changes and market pressures. This project was therefore developed to understand different land-use priorities and explore the future of farming and biodiversity.</p>
<p>Researchers from Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany joined those from the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society, with the project team including Sustainable Farms and the Muttama Creek Landcare Group, to undertake this project.</p>
